N’Aimez Que Moi by Caron

Oh, no worries, N’Aimez Que Moi, I will never forget you. N’Aimez Que Moi is a perfume first launched in 1916 by the perfume house Caron. N’Aimez Que Moi translates to Don’t love anyone but me, which is a name perfectly suited for the perfume’s raison d’être and the perfume’s era. Parfums Caron was established by perfumer, Ernest Daltroff. Monsieur Daltroff created N’Aimez especially for soldiers to give to their wives and girlfriends, as a forget-me-not while off at war. Sniff. War, perfume, worried girlfriends. It’s almost too much. Talk about tugging at your heartstrings.
I knew the perfume’s story before I received my bottle and I giggled with excitement when it arrived. Experiencing the classics is thrilling because you are drinking in a snapshot of history. At first smell, powder. Mmmmm, powder. I adore powder. Some are abhorred by powdery scents, but to this lady, iris and violet = nirvana. Then a tendril of rose floated up. That’s three of my favorites. SLAM DUNK.
I was seized by a flashing memory of my Grandmother. The setting: My Grandmother is seated at her dressing table. The table has an oval vanity mirror. She keeps her powder in a drawer on the right. She is getting ready for church. I sit to her right and watch her apply her makeup, powder, lipstick and then the requisite lipstick dab with a Kleenex, earrings and then the pearls. (Pearls are part of the uniform in the South.) The powder floated into the air and smelled wonderful.
N’Aimez Que Moi is a complex scent with an animalic streak. It is a tender rose fragrance with deep woods that I can’t pick out, but they are there. N’Aimez has a respectful sillage and stayed firmly put and fuming for about 6 hours. I advise not to spray more than 3 times on your touch points. If you like big powder, florals, woods and a bit of skank. Give it a try. It is very different from the perfumes of today, but if you walk into the perfume with an expectation that it will be unique, then you may be able to appreciate it for what it is and what it once was. A timeless beauty.
